Taking VR outside the Class

With so many virtual realities being created, it's going to be crucial that we make sure they all can somehow stand out individually. The whole goal is to ensure that they aren't just seen as videos, but something that people can take away that they might have not known about prior to the new experience. I think with the ad posters being a new requirement, it's going to be beneficial to have an image that will capture a moment that the reader may be interested in. By using images that stand out, with color and animations, the people who pass by may seem drawn into the projects that we have created.

I'm not entirely sure how the set up is going to look like, especially because I'm not sure what Dr.Don has in mind. However, I think it would be a neat idea if we had booths set up individually for each project, with a description on the side as to why the producer chose to create the specific experience. I also think it is a good idea to have one booth, talking about why Virtual Realities individually can be a life changing technological advancement. Since we did have a lot of specialists working to become skilled in the certain jobs, it would be a good idea to have some representatives to talk about what was required and needed to have certain pieces of the video come together.

Given that the project I had been working is about a health issue that a lot of people suffer from, I realized that it's going to be needed to be further explained since the VR for it, is very short. I am going to work with my producer to make sure whatever it is that I am saying is both factual and understandable for the viewer. I know that mentioning that VR isn't entirely what may be experienced, but I want to mention the fact that it's a good way to address the issue in a first hand experience.

In Pam's class we read "Thinking in Education" by John Dewey, who believed that education should be more than just given students the traditional work and have them "do" it. By these means, he stressed how it limits the student to think in a critical way, and thus put little to no effort in creatively finding ways to think about an assignment. With the traditional approach, students think that only having to do the material handout type work, can get them done with what is needed for school and be on their way. However, the problem with this, is the fact that this provides very little skill for the student, because they aren't given other methods of learning that can be applicable to the real-world job settings.

In the VR project, I think that having us all find ways to make "money", through jobs, provides a good sense of real world experience for us. It pushes the students to become skilled whether its programming, video editing, producing the video, etc. I like how in order to get "money", we have to somewhat push ourselves more knowing that there are requirements to do well. Like Dewey, we are being pushed to think of alternatives that can get us to use skills that we might not have been great at, and teach ourselves to learn in ways that we might not be used to. It's a lot of trial and error, but Dewey thinks this is great because it strengthens our knowledge. However, I think the money aspect would be arguably a poor use of reflection of work for Dewey, since it's making the students worry too much about the fact that there should be something in return (other than knowledge) for their work.

We watched a video in class today about the idea of monetary awards given in jobs. Jobs that are payed a certain amount steadily, don't prove to have the same outcome expected, work ethic wise. When people are told that they should do a certain job, they are limited by what it is that they can create, thus ending up with a lack in quality. However, when workers are told that they will get payed a certain amount of money, if they create something unique and innovative on their own, it's a much more positive result that is shown. I think the value of work is changed when people create certain products, and when the quality of work is given a value, it seems to loose it's meaning much quicker. This is why at schools it shouldn't be heavily based on the grade, rather how much it's shown that a student has learned through a certain project, assignment, etc.
